ballet life - drifter and the gypsy blog

Like any other typical girl, I’ve had a lifelong fascination with ballet. One of my favorite movies is The Red Shoes (the drama! the suspense!). My old violin teacher used to dance for the San Francisco Ballet and I love hearing stories of her years in the ballet.

Henry Leutwyler shot a more gritty, real-to-life version of the NYC Ballet for Vanity Fair. I love how he captured the energy and tension of the dancer’s leaps and bounds and blurred movements. To quote Albert Einstein, “Dancers are the athletes of God” and I do agree.

The photographs appear in his book Ballet and were exhibited at the Foley Gallery at the end of 2012.

  • I always wished I could do ballet – and still plan on one day trying to learn! – but those pictures of the feet scare me!

  • Ouch those poor feet. They look like my feet after wearing a really uncomfortable pair of designer shoes. EEK! The other photographs are beautiful, however. Crazy how you never think about what the dancer’s feet look like under those cute slippers

  • so pretty. my feet look like the dancer’s. i call it my brain.

  • I did ballet for 15 years and it was brutal to my feet but I loved every second of it. Sometimes I really miss it and want to go back but I just font have the time.

  • Was this in August’s Vanity Fair? The photos are beautiful! I have a fascination with ballet, too. I kind of secretly wish I was pushed into dancing as a child…

    • Hmm I don’t know. Possibly? Since I got the photos from the Vanity Fair website. I’ll have to check later and see!

  • Seriously, this is an amazing post. I am totally inspired by dance in general, and ballet is just something you need to put all of yourself into it, it is impressive!

    Love those pictures.

  • Poor feet. Remind me of my gymnast hands when I was a teenager. Ballet and gymnastics are, to me, the two most beautiful sports to watch. Classic, elegant, and just stunning.
But I think they’re the most painful ones as well 🙁

Well done, amazing pictures. Real and true and just wow!
