Do you keep a capture journal?

do you keep a capture journal - drifter and the gypsy blog
I recently listened to a Creative Live class in which the instructor talked about keeping what he called a ‘capture journal.’ It kind of struck me. Even as a child, I’ve always had some sort of journal to scribble down notes, to-dos and all other fleeting thoughts that traveled into my stream of consciousness.

I keep my journal next to my bed for when ideas come to me in the middle of the night (which they quite often do). I’ve got piles and piles of journals; records of the musings of my mind.

I never stopped to think that others might do the same as me, which is why the whole concept of a ‘capture journal’ caught my attention. A capture journal is a place to record thoughts, goals, lists and really anything else that comes to your mind. It doesn’t really serve just one purpose… it’s just a place to write down whatever you want whenever you want, all in one convenient place.

I suppose a lot of other creative people have active brains, full of ideas, hopes, dreams, desires, aspirations and inspirations, just waiting to be recorded before they are lost outside the boundaries of memory.

Tell me friends, do you keep a capture journal?

  • Kind of.. I write a bunch of ideas down in a notebook and I like to keep a list of goals in there too to remind me of what I’m hoping to achieve (it’s easy to forget when you’re busy with the daily grind).

  • i love this idea. i keep telling myself i need to get back into journaling– this sounds perfect.

  • I have always kept a capture journal myself – although I just didn’t have a name for it. I guess I just referred to it as my all-around journal or book of lists to distinguish it from more of a diary journal. Now with the iphone though, I generally just jot down all my memos in the notepad, which is kind of unfortunate because there is something really nice about having a tangible journal.

    • I completely agree! I never had a name for my journal either. I too have fallen captive to the convenience of the iPhone notes, but there’s something more special about a journal.

      • Now that you can add photos to Notes on iOS, I find the most exciting thing is using a tangible journal and then capturing photos of certain things and adding them right back into your iphone! 🙂

  • I do have a notebook? Does that count? I’m a person who lives on lists!

  • My notes are sprawled everywhere – my iPhone, my macbook, old notebooks, new notebooks, hell I’ve even been known to write notes on toilet paper (clean of course – because the best ideas happen when I’m in the shower). Basically, I’m a mess of ideas. I struggle to find one place to jot them all down!

  • I never heard the name ‘capture journal’ before but I’ve been recording my mind in journals for years now! I’m currently on my tenth book 🙂 Hearing about others doing the same always make me feel excited, thanks for sharing!

  • Oh wow i never heard of it being called a capture journal before. Interesting and neat. I actually keep two types of journals, one is where i just jot down random things like ideas, to do lists, goals and other musings. and the second journal is one that I share with my significant other, we write letters to each other and put pictures and ticket stubs from movies and things in it.

  • ive found myself carying something like that with me more recently. I write how I feel, any stories or writing drabbles, to-dos, and sometimes the occasional “worry later” note. It’s very relaxing.
