Earlier this week, I had an appointment with my nutritionist. The appointment was for another round of food allergy testing via the skin prick test. The results of the last skin prick + blood tests I got in June weren’t too good, so I was hopeful that this one would be better.

Since my last test in June, I had to really really really watch what I ate. My nutritionist had me start out by eating one food for three days straight, then slowly introducing one new food at a time. (You can read more about my last visit/plan of action here.) I started with eating only fruit. I ate bananas for three days straight, then introduced a different type of fruit every few days. I immediately felt better after limiting the variety of my food. After I exhausted every kind of fruit I could think of, I starting introducing vegetables and I still felt good… until about 1.5 months ago when I noticed the skin on my face was starting to break out again and I was getting bloated after meals… WHAA? Huge red flag. My grandma was coming out for a visit in a week, so I knew I needed to get my body back to normal ASAP. Going on day trips isn’t fun when you’ve got a perpetual stomachache! I did a quick banana-only cleanse for a few days, then went back to my fruitarian diet. I immediately felt better once again.

I’ve just started delving back into the world of vegetables. I started eating sweet potatoes last week and next month I will probably try different vegetables. But for now, I’m only eating fruit + sweet potatoes. And I’m feeling good! (Which makes me happy because I love sweet potatoes. Aren’t they the best?)

This past test, I tested positive for less foods, which means my body is less hyper-reactive, which is good! Since I still tested positive for a good amount of food, my nutritionist really thinks I have Celiac disease. I know I mentioned I blood-tested negative for Celiac disease in Part II, but since Celiac disease is fairly novel, the tests are not always accurate. My nutritionist said she’s seen enough patients with Celiac disease to notice a similar pattern in my health to theirs.

My nutritionist wants me to continue doing exactly what I’m doing now and I’ll get retested for just the foods I tested positive for next month. I’ll also get another blood test in a month to see how my immune system’s doing. (I didn’t get a blood test this past time.) Since my body doesn’t digest food like it’s supposed to, I may very well eat a mainly fruitarian diet indefinitely, as long as it continues to make me feel good. I used to be extremely skeptical about people eating a restricted diet, but now that I’m on the other side of the spectrum, I truly believe that you should do whatever floats your boat!

A lot of you have said you’ve been able to heal your health issues or at least keep them at bay simply by changing your diet! I am continually fascinated by holistic healing and the effect of food on the gut. It’s certainly changed my entire life.

  • Thanks for sharing this. I haven’t shared on my blog, but I have a struggle, as well, with food. For years I was very allergic. Now, I’m thinking it is autoimmune … all my tests for celiac have come back negative, too. I have trouble with a lot of fruit and some vegetables and just about all grains. I seem to tolerate very processed wheat but not whole wheat, ironically. My asthma flairs and I get skin reactions with all kinds of food, still. I’m sorry you are going through this, but thankful you have shared.

    • Hi Sasha! Yes the majority of food-related issues are autoimmune diseases. It’s interesting that you have trouble with a lot of fruit and less so vegetables. I’m just the opposite! I suppose it completely varies from person to person. I get a lot of skin reactions from food too. It’s a long process figuring out which foods trigger the reactions and you may end up cutting out a lot of food that you like, but if it makes you feel better, it’s totally worth it.

  • Oh, this is all so familiar to me. My body definitely does not digest food properly either, and it eventually this (beginning when I was around 12-14), became incredibly disruptive to my life. I become so desperate I cut out all refined sugars, refined flours, soy, most dairy products, starch, processed anything, and so on and so on…I really have been feeling better, but it’s still a journey with its ups and downs. Namely, sometimes I still feel bad enough and if needing to be somewhere, at some event or another, I’ll pop a few pain killers or various pills to get through it, but I’ve found those are temporary fixes, with long term repercussions. It’s difficult to chart my progress, if it’s altered by pills. So, having detoxed my body from all unnatural foods, over a year ago, I think what I need to do next, is detox myself from all pain killers and anything that’s just manipulating my body one way or another…

    I’m following along with the SCD diet, which is slightly less intense than GAPS, but both look to heal the gut and are usually suitable to most gastrointestinal diseases/disorders (such as Celiacs and Chron’s). You seem to be on the right path already though with a nutritionist and just taking it one at a time, with whatever works for you, but if you ever expand to include more foods, and want some recipe ideas, I swear by Her recipes have saved me from becoming hopelessly bored and frustrated with such a restrictive diet. It’s amazing what she can do with all natural foods.

    Thanks for sharing by the way, I get that talking about gut issues isn’t always the loveliest of subjects and at least for me, can feel a bit embarrassing sometimes. But with all the processed foods out there, it’s a no wonder than more and more people (Americans, especially) are finding their eating habits do more harm than good.

    P.S. If you haven’t seen it already, you may like the documentary “Fed Up”…it’s actually quite upsetting at times, but eye-opening.

      I’ve never heard of the SCD diet, but I’ll definitely look into it. Against All Grain seems to have a whole category of SCD recipes.

      Totally agreed that Americans have more of these digestive issues than anyone else. The quality of our food makes me want to move to another country! I’ll have to look up the documentary Fed Up too. 🙂
